The City School District of Â鶹ӰÒô joins organizations and individuals around the world Monday in solemn observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, honoring the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and countless other members of minority groups also killed during the Nazi reign of terror in Europe from 1933-45, before and during World War II.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp complex in Poland on Jan. 27, 1945. More than 1.1 million people were killed at Auschwitz, including nearly 1 million Jews.
The United Nations designated this date as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2005 to remember and honor the victims, and encourage the development of educational programs to help prevent future acts of genocide.
