Face masks no longer are required outdoors on school grounds, according to updated COVID-19 guidance the New York State Department of Health issued Monday. Face masks continue to be required inside all schools and school administrative buildings for all students, faculty, staff and visitors.

The state health department’s update Monday aligned New York’s guidance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s most recent recommendations on how to prioritize safe in-person learning in schools while adhering to appropriate COVID-19 prevention practices.

While face masks are no longer required outdoors on school grounds, including for athletic events, anyone wishing to continue wearing a mask outdoors voluntarily is welcome to do so.

Social distancing guidelines also continue to be in effect.

For Â鶹ӰÒô County, which currently has a moderate risk of COVID-19 transmission, appropriate social distancing continues to be 3 feet for students and 6 feet for adults. Social distancing of 6 feet also is required for students during meals or other times that masks must be removed, and where there is voice projection or instrument use.

We will continue to provide updated information as the state health department provides it to all New York school districts.
