What if you could explore London and ancient Rome all within a 41-minute class period? Our Â鶹ӰÒô High students in Emerging ENL (English as a New Language) 9/10 and English 10 ENL had the exciting opportunity to do just that by utilizing virtual reality (VR) headsets in class on Thursday!
City School District of Â鶹ӰÒô instructional technology coach, Kevin Marcinko, collaborated with ENL teacher Megan Knickerbocker and English teacher Samantha Cooke to guide students through a learning exercise rooted in the Eduprotocols methodology. This approach equips students with essential skills, including communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking.
During the lesson, students donned VR headsets to observe environments such as Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. They were then tasked with sketching what they saw and writing descriptive sentences. In the Emerging ENL 9/10 class, students explored Paris and the ocean. In the English 10 ENL class, students explored both the Globe Theatre and the Colosseum in ancient Rome, enriching their background knowledge as they prepare to delve into the famous Shakespearean play, Julius Caesar.
It was heartwarming to witness the students sharing their enthusiasm for this creative and interactive lesson! We are incredibly grateful for the collaboration of our staff in creating memorable moments like this in the classroom.
